Love. That four-letter word that has defined so much of the animal kingdom. It's the number one theme for song-writing. And why is that? Well, it's because it's the universal language of course. It's the one thing that we all need and want more of in our lives. And if we dig deeper, I believe it's because through love we connect with one another...and ourselves!
So that's the thing, isn't it? Today of all days is a day that celebrates love. Traditionally it was between couples...a man and a woman. Then it was couples of all kinds. In the last few years, there's been a stronger and stronger movement surrounding "Galentines", ie your bestie girlfriends celebrating together. But I really think we need to go even deeper!
I think we need to take some time during that day to show love to ourselves! We spend a lot of time in our own company. Of course, if you have little kids or clingy pets that may not be enough time, but hey...you know what I mean. And I bet that at least part of the time we spend in our company we spend either battling with ourselves or pampering ourselves (sometimes the former follows the latter). Women are traditionally known for putting themselves last in the equation. And it's not uncommon for others to berate us if we put our own needs and wants at the forefront. But ladies, come on, it's a way we have to honour ourselves!
I remember when our daughters were preschool-aged. I went on a trip, on my own. Friends and family were all concerned about my family's welfare. Some people even made my husband casseroles for while I was gone. Seriously. I was like, wait, what? Where were the casseroles when I was home fending for myself....not even when I was 8.5 months pregnant with two other kids under the age of 4 did I have people bringing me pre-cooked dinners. And I know my story isn't uncommon, is it, ladies?
As women, we wear many hats and far too often we put ourselves last on the list. I'm a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, an entrepreneur, an employee, a volunteer, a this and a that. Oh, and right...I'm a marvelous human being named Brenda. She's so pleased to meet you. What if we STARTED at the end of the list...whatever your titles. Let's focus on just being us at all times. Let's be true to ourselves and let the world see a little piece of that glory!
So today, by all means, celebrate the day of love with whomever your significant others are, but remember to celebrate yourself most of all because you are marvelous! And share those wins with us in the comments below!
Have a fantabulous day!
Smiles, Brenda
